Plenty. Here is a random list of stuff we like.
Edinburgh by train. A lovely coastal route that affords a terrific panorama of Edinburgh, the castle, Arthur’s Seat, Berwick Law, the three magnificent Forth bridges. 45 minute journey time from Markinch and takes the grind from driving.
Dundee. For so long pos industrial and post just about everything else. The V & A has now docked and there are other great (but underated) museums too. Good grub and shopping. Make a day of it.
St Andrews. 40 mins by car tops. Good food, great beaches, boring old golf courses and of course seat of Scottish Government in the dark ages in the form of St Andrews Cathedral.
East Neuk. The coastal drive from the cottage to St Andrews. Take a separate day to explore the fishing villages, excellent food and not forgetting Scotland’s nuclear bunker.
Perth. Combine with a visit to Scone Palace. Worth a day.
Dunkeld. Arguably where the Highlands really start. 60 min drive. Absolutely beautiful. Stewart can advise on walks and cycling as well.
Pitlochry. Further North. A wee bitty touristy but fantastic hinterland.
